At age 21, Trent Ling finally become the voice of his own school, perennial football power Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. Under Hall-of-Fame coach, Frosty Westering, PLU played in eight national championship games, winning four of them. Trent enjoyed covering one of the elite programs in history during his final two years at the school.
“Frosty and the whole PLU broadcast experiences were too great for me then and now,” Trent recollects. “Monumental and life-grabbing were my years covering the Lutes. The whole thing is still largely inexpressible.”
Below, check out the audio link featuring one of Trent’s many KTAC-85 radio promos for yet another dominant PLU football season in 1986. At only one minute in length, it does give off some of the flavor of the times.

I was the official scorer. I found out 15 minutes prior to game time I would not be next to Trent or Steve Fisher on the radio broadcast. We all nailed it on that day. Great memories.
I was the Sports Information Director at Pacific Lutheran and Trent was YEARS ahead of his time and could have made his “BigTime” in the radio booth. A pro’s pro at 21.
Like I’ve already written on another post, broadcasting was God letting you practice for the days ahead. Unlike so many people, you destroyed ’embarrassment’, ‘shy’ and ‘timidity’ at such a young age. You made every effort to make life interesting, enriching and fulfilling; you refused then and you refuse now to allow ‘boring’ to creep into your days. Amen!
Trent, this is so cool! Did you narrate any soccer games? I would love to hear you say the traditonal Hispanic “Gooooooolllllllll!” :).
This is just too much! How well I remember sweet Ari giving up her favorite thing (put hand); she was such a big girl about it. And a nice reminder of your excitement doing what you loved; how much we loved listening to you. And now,,, still excited about doing what you love and we still love listening to you.
