Trent Ling always knew that he was very strange. But, it wasn’t until his teenage years that he began broadcasting that fact to the world. Today, one of Trent’s early radio forays comes available on the website.
Near the end of Summer 1979, Trent felt it necessary to call KNBR DJ, CJ Bronson, in San Francisco in the middle of the night (2:17 AM) to let her know that she had listeners both near and far. Quite surprisingly to Trent, CJ put Trent on the air briefly as she promoted some programming changes.
“For me, this call says so much despite its brevity and weirdness,” Trent shares 33 years later. “First of all, the static is quite noticeable on the recording, and yes I would patiently and eagerly listen through such waves of noisy interference routinely. Second, though I already know the answer, I still have to ask, ‘What was I thinking?’ Third, this clip sadly represents a bygone era of back when radio and imagination reigned and the age of video saturation and 2-second attention spans had not yet emerged. Fourth through infinity, oh I could go on…”
Enjoy this rather unorthodox moment in the continuing stroll through Trent’s years!

One of my thoughts was, “Didn’t Seattle have any broadcasters that you enjoyed listening to?” You keep referring to yourself as ‘weird’ but it’s the weird ones that leave behind legacies for generations. Those who think outside the box, those who are willing to fall and risk it, those who are brave beyond their years; these people make it happen. Back in 1979, no one had a clue as to what would happen in 1992 between you and the Lord. Amen!
Thank you for enriching us by strolling through your years, Om Trent! When I started listening to the radio as a kid, AM was no longer famous. So, it’s good to hear the recording here!
This is humbling for me. I was about 12 when I received a cassette recorder. I never was creative in my recordings instead it was more of a player as I remember it – first cassette was the Supremes! Fast forward and after much has been written here about children and parents – my hope is that I’ve demonstrated some imaginative creativity for our daughter to absorb. Thank you for endless examples. Love you.
You almost sounded like Za! So cute and very brave 🙂
What a cute, loving, giving, and very strange boy you were! love you.
Very cool, Trent! We now need a picture to go along with the 14 year old’s voice :)! How about it?
