Simply going about his business one moment, Trent Ling the next moment found himself cajoled into boarding the vintage Miss Madison Unlimited Hydroplane on the mighty Ohio River in Madison, Indiana. Hydroplane driving legend Chip Hanauer insisted that Trent take to the race course when Miss Madison restorer and pilot Dave Williams offered the opportunity. After a quick primer, a suit fitting, and several pats on the back, Trent was onto the course for a four-lap run.
“It was one of those things that developed so quickly that I didn’t really have a chance to consider whether it was a good idea or not,” Trent recalls 10 years later. “Chip felt that my love of the sport simply required that I take full advantage of this chance. Dave was so accommodating and professional, and he even insisted that I take the wheel down the straightaways. I still can’t believe that it all came together at such a moment’s notice on the hometown course of the Madison 31 years after it won the Gold Cup on the same course. I’ll always be thankful to Chip and Dave for making this come together, even against my own will.”
For those scoring at home, that’s Trent seated on the right and Dave Williams on the left. Dave waves on the first pass while Trent drives. On the next pass when both are waving, apparently nobody is driving!

Like you’ve said many times before, you have lived innumerable lives already and you’re not even fifty yet. This is awesome to see. In another such posting I had written about childhood dreams coming true–however this takes the cake! 2002 was a doozy of a year for both the Ling family and the family of believers in Orlando.
Goodness! Very unreal…
That is awesome! Very enjoyable watching it, now don’t ask me because driving on the road is already an impossible task for me, let alone this!
A helmet on a boat going over one hundred twenty miles per hour, now that is funny. I guess if your head comes off in a crash that your skull will I assume be intact. This event I was unaware of so this was nice to watch as your mouth never seemed to close in the captions. Thanks for sharing.
Love you,
Chad
Awesome! What a memory.
Thanks for the look back, Great Memories!! What a year we had. 2002!!!!
Ah, the hydro tour…memories! You need to post the picture of you in your outfit when Ari asked, “Who’s the guy with the antennas?” So funny!
I am convinced! Brother, you have done it all :)! Very cool!
We should have a Ministry Hydroplane called “I am a cowboy…”, and you can take us all for a ride in Lake Eola. Lol!
What a thrilling ride! You looked so happy and excited. I was nervous and proud of you got the advantage to ride and drive Miss Madison! Thanks to Chip 🙂 2002, what a year… thanks for bringing back a great memory of the hydro tour.
